Long before I discovered this treasured site I had rented more than a few of the movies found here. Some were issued on video by "Something Weird Video," the others I'm not sure of. To this very day, some of these films can be found for sale on the internet. NOT by some disc-burning doofus, but by what seems to be legitimate collectible nostalgic video/dvd compilation companies. I don't want to open a can of ephemeral worms, but what gives? I thought Rick owns these films?

I think Mr P himself would be the first to tell you he does not own most of these films - but he and his staff seek to preserve these films. It's a valuable service, and the freely downloadable online archive here is one of a kind and unbelievably generous.

Some sellers of video take advantage of the fact that the films are not owned by anyone, and repackage them for release. I don't think these people are getting rich.

As for movies, there are often several sources for public domain films. They are frequently not identical, because each individual print can be damaged and missing footage for various reasons. In some cases, dealers offer versions restored from multiple sources. Some of the movies in the FEATURE FILMS section here are extremely edited, but hey, they're free.
